Member Posts: 1 | Brian Fairweather My involvement with pigeons, pigeon racing, and pigeon people, goes back (51) years! even earlier when I first saw pigeons, I was in a stroller. This was at the local pet shop in Parramatta (N.S.W) western sydney. This was called lewises pet shop ! a long standing pet produce establishment which, existed for many decades ! the 1950Â’s,1960Â’s,1970Â’s,and I think, into the 80Â’s. But whould have been there in the 1940Â’s. I have kept pigeons at (4) residences harris park-dundas,st maryÂ’s and wentworthville. Having raced in (4) pigeon clubs eastwood- Parramatta, st maryÂ’s- Wentworthville. These being,in the ccf federation (sydney).Out of the (51) years with birds. Only (19) seasons I have actually raced. This being mainly due to my working life schedule. Which was pretty much over all hours, night and day.I found it difficult to fly birds, continually with these hours, you cannot fly pigeons by,oneself. When attempting racing on your own could become to intense for me. I have basically regarded myself as a pigeon lover. Even though I have had many successÂ’s over time ! have topped ccf fed the only race I have, never timed in (my son timing in on a Wednesday 1998). Have won 600 miles at first attempt (Bundaberg to sydney 1976) many flyers flying continuously and never been fortunate to, have done this. My first bird My first bird was acquired (without permission) from the above said pet shop. A young bird still squeaking and rung! This set the ball rolling you chould say for many acquisitions of birds from (1963) up until this current time (2014).There has been thousands. My squeaker cost me ( two shillings old money).I took it home in a shoebox from lewises! I told my father I had found it in the box ( I lied) I think ive been paying for it ever since ! My first pair of racing pigeons ( that actually raced) from a racing flyer came from sid & Lindsey smith (1967) well renowned in pigeon circles and top flyerÂ’s of the time ! ( eastwood Parramatta ).Lindsey smith flying many clubs in sydney ! and also flying in (3) sydney feds ccf, nrp, frp. Before moving to south Australia becoming well known there, and around Australia in the pigeon circles. The smithÂ’s taught me how to look after pigeons.,this has stuck with me all my pigeon years. I have tried to keep it as brief as i can ! as I do believe I can waffle on when I write something ! I chould fill many pages but I didnÂ’t want to do that. There are many incidences over the years ! some good some not so good !.(With the pigeons). I will end this here and now ! im sure there there are many pigeon people who have a story to tell about there pigeon lives.( Incidentally my first bird the one I brought home in a box got sick ! Not long after I got it.) It was rung with ring prefix GPC-63-205 old Granville club western sydney.( I still have this ring to this very day ! ) Brian Fairweather December 2014 | |
